Mental Diet: The Subtle Art Of Transforming your Life

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve …

(Romans 12 vs 2)

If I asked you to write down your mind chatter for a day, would you be willing to read what you have put up with within you? When I came into Neville’s teachings, his lecture “Control Your Inner Conversations” truly gave me a lot to digest regarding my life. All day, everyday, 24/7, we are not exempt from having mind chatter (inner conversations)- talking to yourself over what clothes do or do not fit you, the weather being cold or sunny, your broke friend who keeps asking you for money, the government, your SP, your co-worker and all.

“It’s the inner speech that is frozen in the world round about us. This whole vast world is but “frozen” inner speech. What are we saying on the inside? ”

Neville (Control your inner conversations)

I came across a book titled “The Game of Life and How to Play it” by Florence Scovel Shinn. She talked about the creative power of the mind and how to direct your mind to focus on the good and only that. Then, I began to practice with the affirmations from her books, as well as those from Genevieve Behrend, Catherine Ponder and Joseph Murphy. Each of these authors made it easier for me to understand the teachings of Neville Goddard. I’m not suggesting you read all of the works of these authors mentioned, but for me I fell off Neville’s teachings many times because (then) I couldn’t bring my mind to understand the simplicity of his work. In my opinion, each of these other authors conveyed the same truth as Neville preached.

You might be wondering, “But how am I supposed to handle my mental monologue?”.

“There are two gifts that God has given to man alone, and to no other mortal creature, and these two gifts are Mind and Speech. And the gifts of Mind and Speech are essential and identical with Immortality. If they are used rightly, man will not differ in any respect from the immortals”.

Neville (Control your Inner conversations)

I started with affirmations, though Neville’s teachings does not include the use of them, and they helped me redirect the focus of my mind. I had used affirmations to get rid of panic attacks without any medication, so it was my go-to tool to retrain my mind again, and to master the control of my inner monologue.

“…the Creator of all creators specifically work in me and through me, all works are perfectly done, my mind is the centre of divine accomplishments”

Genevieve Behrend

“I am all there is, beside me, there is none”

Neville Goddard

As I said these affirmations over and over again in my mind, with ease, I became aware of the power within me. I suddenly became calm in situations where I’d have panicked and reacted to the external world, and I was confident in this new way of life and the truth it inspires. There’s no going back.

“So you read something, and actually inwardly you are repeating the words. Well now, the whole thing is in your imagination”

Neville Goddard (Control your inner conversations)

The Bible makes it clear too.

“Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts”.

(Proverbs 4:23 Good News Translation)

“Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life”.

(Proverbs 4: 23 New King James Version)

Instead of monitoring my mental conversations, I became aware of them and gently reaffirmed  “who I really am.” Often in my sleep, I’d hear myself (without speaking out loud) saying my affirmations over and over till I awoke in the morning.  Once, I had started saying my affirmations while being in a deep sleep, when suddenly I was transformed into rays of light and became engulfed within its presence, and then suddenly it bursted out of my chest. Another incident also occurred in my sleep and while the affirmations began, I heard a voice ask me what do you want?“. I answered, without speaking out loud, “ABUNDANCE!“. I knew what had happened and since then there has been several other encounters.

You see, mental dieting is all about deciding how you really want to live your life and staying true to the decision you have made.

It’s like a pregnant woman, she knows she has to make healthy choices in preserving the life of her unborn child and hers as well. She ensures her vitamins are taken, eats well, rests well, and would literally do anything to ensure she delivers a healthy baby.

Through repetition of affirmations and persistence, I redirected my mind to focus on what I want, dwelling on happy thoughts, selecting beautiful imaginings of events and watching things that uplift my spirit. I allowed only that which is good and profitable to dwell within me. You’ve just got to be selective of what you buy into, we’re always making  purchases with our mental images, thoughts and words. Whenever I felt frustrated, angry or overwhelmed, I allowed those emotions to flow freely, and then I got back up into the state of I AM.

“Speak it inwardly in your imagination only. Make your inner conversations match your fulfilled desire. What you desire to hear without, you must hear within. Embrace the without within and become one who hears only that which implies the fulfillment of his desires and all the external happenings in the world will become a bridge leading to the objective realization of your desires”.

Neville Goddard (Awakened Imagination)

What are you saying to yourself and others? Because you’re God, you’re also talking to God within you. He always hears you and is in every conversation, thoughts or images you’re putting up. They go forth and will not come back void, but will prosper wherever it is sent.

“My mind is the place of my intellect, reasoning, and intentions; my behavior begins in my mind, and my mind is where spiritual transformation happens. The object of my regular thinking will determine how my days, years, and ultimately my life plays out. Everything starts in the mind.”

Judy Allen

Do I still have unlovely thoughts creep in? Not often. I’m unperturbed with them, though they don’t come visiting and overstay like they used to. I acknowledge them at the point of entry and bid them a loving farewell as they depart from my awareness. Neville mentioned not to “fight” them, but simply turn your attention away .

Just as you’re selective of your meals, some people are lactose intolerant, well, be negativity intolerant, with your mental food. Select only that which gives life to your being.

Go on and enjoy dieting! It’s fun and exciting, simply assume you’re already transformed and renewed inside out. If affirmations help you, go on with it. When you become aware of the direction of your thoughts staying on the wrong lane, gently press stop (inwardly) and maneuver to the right lane.  Results will surely follow,

My life is so colorful, amazing and fulfilling!

I am transformed, renewed and restored in Divine Love!

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come!”

2Corinthians 5: 17

I AM LOVE!!!

This is great. Thank you for writing this. I think some folks have “confusion” as who to follow si write this response for them..bcuz i was one!

I have been listening to Murphy a lot…”The Power of Your Subconscious Mind”–much is similar to Neville except he focuses more on prayer, affirmations, and the subconscious mind. To me–the sub. mind IS GOD. It all boils down to “language” and at first, I was “bugged” by what to use..sub. mind, imagination, Goddard or Joseph….etc. Then I realized it’s really all the same. The essence is–we imagine all the time. We talk to ourselves all the time. All of that is “moving through” our conscious and subconscious minds to that great invisible “matrix” or universal “space” where the mystical magic of manifestation takes place.

While they may use different language–they all agree (i think?) that FEELING and BELIEVING are constant keys to success.

The universal magic “place” —nobody really explains and probably can’t…but they know when done properly through persistence, feeling and believing…that mysterious place turns things INTO things.

A lot of “Nevllites” downplay affirmations, rarely, if ever talk about the subconscious mind power and “talking to god” seems “unnecessary because you are god.

To me–it’s all the same–imagination, subcon. mind, self-talk, affirmations, afformations, God, etc. It’s all within us and all going “to the same end”

It’s all good! use what feels right and what works. Imagining conflict between them is counter-productive.

Thank you for writing this! You’re absolutely right…they’re all the same. I used to think the imagination and self-talk/inner conversations were different from the subconscious when in truth it really is all the same. I didn’t even realize I was creating an inner conflict right there and confusion within myself!

Love your article as it gets to the heart of transformation. Mind and Speech are the two most precious gifts we have. Learning how to use these gifts is built into the journey within and through Consciousness (I AM/our awareness of being). After reading your article I went and re-read Neville’s lecture “Control Your Inner Conversations.”
I really resonated with what was said in that lecture. Thank you for pointing me back to what is most important which is what I am feeding God. The mind of man is the mouth of God and whatever I say about myself or a “seeming other” I am actually saying about God. Since God and I are one, it is I who will experience the effects of those inner conversations. God is the Invisible Spiritual aspect of Self and I am the Visible Physical aspect of that same Self. Not only are the Father and I one, but ALL is one which is why my world is my consciousness pushed out.
For me, Neville is the BEST and my foundation teaching. I have read the others you have mentioned and understand them better now only because I understood Neville first. I run everything past my Neville foundation first and if it doesn’t match up, I discard it because I know that Consciousness is the one and only reality and imagining (self-talk) creates reality.
Please continue writing for this website because your posts are right on track and inspire us all to be champions in our own worlds. Namaste.

    Hi.

Can you share the affirmations you used to get rid of panic attacks without medication?

Hi, great writing. My question: many people claim that where your focus is, there is your creation. Honestly, sometimes it’s very hard to keep focus or pay attention to your thoughts throughout the day, even though I know that’s key. So in your view, how long does it take for positive talk and affirmation to naturally sink in and you no longer have to be frantically paying attention? Supposedly a few weeks and everything gets easier because it simply becomes a habit in your brain. What is your insight?
